Julia Fullerton Batten was born in Bremen, Germany, in 1970.
She moved to the UK in 1986, where she decided to pursue a career in photography. She graduated at the Berkshire College of Art and Design, where she assisted for a few years. A series of photographies she shot during a trip in Vietnam won her a series of awards in Germany, where she signed with an agent. Then came an assignement in Australia. Since then she has shot many commercials and campaigns for big name agencies and journals.
Her main work is a three-part project on teenage girls. There she captures the transition from adolescence to womanhood, from innoncence to experience, the girls' changing appereances and their new role in society. She also compares the cultural differerences between Caucasian and Asian school-girls. In the third part of her project the girls are portraited as floating, as if to simbolize their uncertainty. For all her teenager series Julia choses to avoid professional models, in order to keep the freshness and naturalness of her images.
