Célèbre pour ses images de combat spectaculaires, David Douglas Duncan s'impose comme un des photographes les plus marquants du XXe siècle.
Après de brèves études d'archéologie à l'Université d'Arizona, il s'oriente vers un cursus de zoologie et d'espagnol à Miami. Egalement passionné de photojournalisme, le jeune homme décide très tôt de se spécialiser dans le reportage de guerre. Tour à tour affecté en Californie, à Hawaii et dans le Pacifique, il devient Marine américain lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, puis correspondant pour Life en Corée et au Viêt-nam. Le photographe couvre ainsi de nombreux événements, tels la fin du British Raj en Inde et les conflits en Turquie, en Europe de l'Est, en Afrique ou au Moyen-Orient. Rassemblés dans les ouvrages 'I protest !' en 1968, comme dans 'War Without Heroes', ses travaux sur la guerre du Viêt-nam révèlent la beauté et la douleur de l'humanité. En atteste son livre 'This Is War !' en 1961, tout comme 'Yankee Nomad', publié cinq ans plus tard et réédité sous le titre de 'Photo Nomad' en 2003. Outre son activité de correspondant, Duncan est connu pour ses portraits de Pablo Picasso, ainsi que pour ses ouvrages consacrés au maître espagnol, tels 'Picasso and Jacqueline' ou 'Goodbye Picasso'. Mais c'est avant tout en raison de son oeuvre exceptionnelle sur la guerre de Corée qu'il est exposé en 2008 dans le cadre du festival international de photojournalisme 'Visa pour l'image'. Il s'agit d'une consécration pour cet artiste majeur, qui a su mettre en lumière le caractère paradoxal de la guerre, à la fois barbare et noble.
Famous for his images of spectacular fights, David Douglas Duncan has imposed himself as one on the most influencing photographer of the XXth century.
After some brief studies of archeology at the University of Arizona, he pursuits a course of zoology and Spanish in Miami. Passionate also for photojournalism, the young man decides very early to specialize in reporting war. Dispatched in California, Hawaii and in the pacific, he becomes Marine in the second world war and afterwards correspondent for Life in Corea and Vietnam. He reports also a series of events, like the end of the British Raj in India and the conflicts in Turkey, Eastern Europe, Africa and Middle East. Assembled in the work “I protest!” in 1968, and also in “War without Heroes”, his works on the war in Vietnam reveal the beauty and pain of humanity. This is shown also in his book “This is War!” in 1961, and also in “Yankee Nomad”, published five years later and republished under the title “Photo Nomad” in 2003. Besides his activity of correspondent, Duncan is known for his portraits of Pablo Picasso, and also for his works dedicated to the Spanish Master, like “Picasso and Jacqueline” or “Goodbye Picasso”. However he is first of all known for his exceptional work on the war of Corea, exposed in 2008 in the international festival of photojournalism “Visa pour l’image”. It was a consecration for this major artist, who has displayed the paradoxical character of the war, at times barbaric and noble.
